Feb. 16 - Feb. 19 - Transplanting seedlings

The weather has changed for the better, with snow just about all gone (I think due to the fact that I bought a snowblower) and the sun staying up a bit longer week by week. Most of my flower seeds have now come up, so I have to keep a careful eye on keeping them moist and, once their first true leaves come up, I will give them some starter fertilizer.

The other plants are doing well, with the transplanted onions looking very healthy after their haircut and the Campari tomatoes now touching the grow lights. It is almost time to repot my broccoli and cabbage seedlings as their true leaves are visible. With a month still to go before they go into the outdoor garden, I have to make sure I keep them well feed and not overwater them.

I haven’t gotten an electric bill yet, so it will be interesting to see how much my electricity costs have gone up since installing the 8 grow lights.

Today (Feb 19) I transplanted 16 broccoli plants from seed starts of Feb 6. The seeds are from Holmes and they look very good. I also needed to transplant Cabbage seedlings (7 plants) from Hoss that have pretty large second leaves. The Ferry cabbage seedlings are smaller, but I also transplanted 6 of those.

I am using SunGro soil I bought last year and Solo cups. I will add some starter fertilizer very soon as well. I take less than half the recommended mix so as to not burn the plants and also bottom water the plants.
